Black River (Cheboygan)
About
Through Cheboygan County's northern forests, the Black River runs 40 miles from Clark Bridge down to its mouth at Cheboygan, averaging 380 CFS with optimal flows between 200-800. The upper section from Clark Bridge to Black Lake offers remote forest paddling through riffles and occasional deeper pools, while the lower stretch from Black Lake outlet to Cheboygan widens and gentles as it approaches Lake Huron. Black River Timber Drives moved white pine logs down these waters from the 1860s through 1895, leaving behind the occasional remnant boom pier or splash dam foundation. Black Lake itself anchored a sturgeon recovery effort beginning in 2000, bringing native fish populations back to pre-logging levels. Black River Canoe Outfitters serves paddlers on both sections, though the upper river sees far less traffic. USGS gauge 04132000 tracks the flow — anything above 600 CFS pushes hard through the tighter bends, while below 250 CFS the riffles start to scrape.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
