The river runs optimal between 675 and 2,050 CFS according to USGS gauge 04040000. Seven distinct sections break the run from Rock Rapids down to the Carp River Fishing Pier, passing under Interstate 75 near the takeout. The Forest Service maintains the Carp River Campground mid-route, and the river holds designated water trail status for paddlers working the full corridor. Notable drops include Rock Rapids at the put-in and MacDonalds Rapids between road crossings 3119 and 3308.
