Coldwater River
About
Through Branch and Calhoun counties, the Coldwater River runs 65 miles of riffles and pools from its headwaters to the Kalamazoo River confluence. At 210 CFS average (optimal range 100–400), it maintains good paddling depth through most seasons. The Quincy to Union City stretch covers 25 miles of the best water, where wooded banks replace the more developed upper reaches. Below Union City, the final 20 miles open into a wider valley before joining the Kalamazoo. The Potawatomi lived along this prairie-forest border for centuries before European settlement. Branch County designated it a water trail in 2018, recognizing the 45 miles of good paddling water from Quincy downstream. USGS gauge 04096460 tracks flows for trip planning.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
