Crystal River (Glen Arbor)
About
Spring-fed flows of 75 CFS average push the Crystal River through 2.5 miles of crystal-clear water within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Leelanau County. The complete run from Fisher Road to Glen Lake offers riffles over sand and gravel with optimal flows between 40–150 CFS. At higher levels the current picks up considerably for such a short stretch. The National Park Service has managed this corridor since the lakeshore's establishment in 1970, and two local outfitters — Crystal River Outfitters and Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak — provide rentals for what amounts to an hour-long float through protected dunes country. USGS gauge 04126802 tracks the flows, though with spring-fed consistency, dramatic swings are rare.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
