Dowagiac River
About
Spring creek water through Cass County runs intimate and cold from Dowagiac to its confluence with the St. Joseph River. The Dowagiac covers 30 miles as a Michigan Designated Trout Stream, averaging 180 CFS with optimal flows between 100–400. Above Sumnerville, the upper river holds tight to its banks with classic spring creek character — clear water over gravel with steady riffles. Below Sumnerville, it opens into wider meanders before joining the St. Joseph. The Potawatomi knew these headwaters long before European settlement, and recent habitat restoration work in 2010 has improved spawning conditions throughout the system. Dowagiac Creek Outfitters runs trips on the lower sections where the river has room to paddle. USGS gauge 04101800 tracks the flows that keep this fishery productive.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
