Manistee River
About
From Gaylord to Lake Michigan, the Manistee River runs 190 miles through the heart of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, flowing at 740 CFS average through Manistee and Wexford counties. Between 1847 and 1895, Manistee earned the title "Logging Capital of the World" as millions of white pine logs rode spring floods down this corridor. The river carries a National Scenic River designation earned in 1980, dividing into three distinct characters: the remote upper stretch from Gaylord to Hodenpyl Dam, the middle section from Hodenpyl to Tippy Dam that offers classic canoe water, and the lower reach from Tippy Dam to Lake Michigan that serves as a steelhead corridor. The Tippy Dam tailwater gained recognition in 2022 as world-record territory for steelhead. At optimal flows between 300 and 1,200 CFS, the Manistee runs mostly riffles with occasional deeper pools. Pine River Paddlesports Center operates as a primary outfitter for river trips.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
