Manistique River
About
Through 71 miles of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Manistique River winds from its headwaters lake to Lake Michigan at an average 750 CFS, with optimal flows between 300–1500 CFS. The upper 25 miles from Manistique Lake to Germfask offer Class I wilderness paddling through the Hiawatha National Forest, while the middle section from Germfask to Cooks covers 30 miles of Class I–II water suited to remote multi-day floats. The lower 16 miles from Cooks to Lake Michigan return to Class I on larger water approaching the Great Lakes. Tributaries within the system hold Michigan Designated Trout Stream status, and portions of the watershed flow through Seney National Wildlife Refuge. The river crosses Schoolcraft, Luce, and Mackinac counties with USGS gauge 04056500 providing flow data. Northland Outfitters serves paddlers looking for gear or shuttle services on this system.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
