Platte River
About
Flowing 30 miles through Benzie County, the Platte River holds a place in Great Lakes salmon restoration — in 1966 it became the site of the first successful coho salmon stocking in the Great Lakes. The upper section from Platte River State Hatchery to US-31 meanders gently through flatwater. The lower section from US-31 to Platte Bay runs through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore corridor established in 1970, where dunes rise directly above the riverbanks. At 150 CFS average (optimal 80–300), the Platte runs Class I throughout — no rapids, no technical features. Michigan Natural River designation protects the corridor. Riverside Canoes and Platte River Campground handle shuttles and access from the area. USGS gauge 04126740 confirms flow conditions before launch.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
