Thornapple River
About
Ninety miles of gentle riffles through Barry and Eaton counties, the Thornapple runs from agricultural headwaters to its confluence with the Grand River at Grand Rapids. At 680 CFS average, optimal flows range from 300 to 1200 CFS on USGS gauge 04117500. The upper section from Vermontville to Hastings meanders through farmland with consistent but mild gradient. Below Hastings, the river widens as it approaches the Grand River confluence, picking up volume and speed. The Potawatomi lived along these banks before European settlement. A 2010 watershed management plan addressed agricultural runoff and habitat restoration throughout the drainage. Thornapple River Livery provides canoe and kayak rentals for day trips on the lower sections.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
