Two Hearted River
About
From Reed and Green Bridge to Lake Superior, the Two Hearted River runs 20 miles through Michigan's Upper Peninsula backcountry in Luce County. Designated Wild & Scenic in 2012 and protected within Lake Superior State Forest, this Class I float averages 290 CFS with an optimal range of 100–500 CFS on USGS gauge 04044800. The river flows through traditional Lake Superior Ojibwe territory and gained literary fame when Hemingway wrote "Big Two-Hearted River" in 1924, though he actually fished the nearby Fox River. Two Hearted River Canoe Trips provides outfitting services for paddlers making the full run to the Great Lakes shoreline. The Michigan Natural River designation maintains the corridor's undeveloped character through dense forest and wetlands that define much of the Upper Peninsula's river country.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
