Cannon River
About
From Faribault through Rice and Goodhue counties, the Cannon River runs 112 miles of Class I water at an average 620 CFS, with optimal flows between 200–1500 CFS according to gauge 05355200. The 25-mile stretch from Northfield to Cannon Falls passes through wooded bluffs that define the river's character, while the upper 20 miles from Faribault to Northfield offer a gentler college-town paddle. Below Cannon Falls, the final 20 miles approach the Mississippi River bluffs near Red Wing. The Cannon River Wilderness Area protects portions of the corridor, and the river holds Wild & Scenic Study designation. Cannon River Canoe Rental provides outfitter services along the route.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
