Leaf River
About
Through Mississippi's Pine Belt, the Leaf River cuts 180 miles from Taylorsville to its confluence with the Chickasawhay, forming the Pascagoula River system. At 2,400 CFS average flow, this is substantial water even in drought — optimal range runs from 300 CFS up to 3,000 CFS, making it paddleable year-round. The upper 60 miles from Taylorsville to Ellisville thread narrow channels through piney woods. Below Ellisville, the middle section opens into sandbars and riffles for another 60 miles to Hattiesburg. The final stretch to Merrill widens and slows as it approaches the coastal plain. All Class I water throughout, with the Choctaw people calling this Pine Belt heartland home before European contact. Mississippi designated it a Scenic Stream, and the 2010 Pascagoula River Basin Conservation effort protects watershed integrity. Leaf River Paddle Company operates commercial trips on the system. USGS gauge 02473000 at Hattiesburg tracks flows through Smith and Jones counties.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
