About

From Philadelphia through 444 miles of Choctaw country, the Pearl River carries an average 4,800 CFS south to the Gulf of Mexico, defining the Mississippi-Louisiana border through its final 100 miles of cypress swamps. The upper 60 miles from Philadelphia to Carthage pass through Neshoba and Leake counties in the heart of Mississippi, while the middle section runs 80 miles from the Jackson metro area to Georgetown, shifting from urban corridors to rural bottomland. Below Bogalusa, the lower Pearl enters true border swamp for its final push to the coast. At Class I throughout with an optimal range of 500–5,000 CFS, this is big water paddling through the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area. Pearl River Paddle Trails operates guided trips on sections of the river. USGS gauge 02482000 tracks the main stem flows, though spring floods can push the Pearl well above its banks across the broad floodplain that has defined this drainage for millennia.
