About

Through Iron and Jefferson counties, the Big River runs 135 miles of Class I-II water at an average 680 CFS, with optimal flows between 200-1500 CFS on gauge 07018500. The Washington State Park to Cedar Hill section covers 40 miles of the river's best paddling, cutting between limestone bluffs that define this stretch. Above that, the Bonne Terre to Washington State Park corridor follows 40 miles through the old Lead Belt mining district. Below Cedar Hill, the final 55 miles widen considerably before meeting the Meramec, offering easier access for day trips. Big River Canoe Rental operates along the system, and the entire length holds Missouri State Water Trail designation. Washington State Park anchors the middle section with developed camping and launch facilities.
