St. Francis River
About
From Missouri's Madison County highlands, the St. Francis River cuts 20 miles of granite shoals and ledge drops that rank among the state's most technical whitewater. The main event runs three miles through Millstream Gardens Conservation Area, where Class III-IV rapids demand precise boat control at the river's average 820 CFS. Above Millstream, eight miles from Silver Mines provide Class II warm-up water, while the nine miles below to Highway H offer Class I-II recovery floats. Optimal flows range from 400 to 2,500 CFS on gauge 07037500 — the upper end pushes several drops into solid Class IV territory. Millstream Gardens provides the primary access point, and the conservation area designation protects the igneous bedrock that creates the river's signature stair-step profile. This is Missouri's closest approximation to Appalachian-style technical paddling, carved through Precambrian granite rather than the limestone that dominates most state waterways.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
