Carson River — East Fork
About
Class II-III drops through Markleeville Canyon carve a volcanic gorge in Douglas County, where the Carson River transitions from Sierra granite to Nevada rangeland over 70 miles. The upper canyon section delivers technical water at 280 CFS average, with optimal flows between 200-800 CFS on gauge 10309000. Below the mountains, the Gardnerville to Dayton stretch mellows to Class I ranch valley floating through cottonwood corridors and hay fields. Carson River Resort operates guided trips through both sections within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest boundaries. The Carson River Coalition works to maintain flows and habitat along the entire drainage.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
