Saco River
About
From Crawford Notch to the Maine border, 84 miles of the Saco River cut through Carroll County's White Mountain National Forest with flows averaging 1,800 CFS. The upper section from Crawford Notch to North Conway runs Class II–III through mountain headwaters, while the classic stretch from North Conway to Fryeburg, Maine drops to Class I with extensive sandbar camping opportunities. Below Fryeburg to Hiram, Maine, the lower river continues at Class I through broader valleys. Operating within the optimal range of 400–2,000 CFS according to USGS gauge 01064500, the Saco supports multiple commercial outfitters including Saco Bound and Canal Bridge Canoes. Protected under New Hampshire's Rivers Management Program, the corridor maintains undeveloped stretches despite heavy recreational use during peak season.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
