Great Egg Harbor River
About
Wild & Scenic since 1992, the Great Egg Harbor River carries 360 CFS of cedar water through 57 miles of Pine Barrens from Atlantic and Camden counties to the coast. The upper sections from New Brooklyn to Penny Pot run Class I through undeveloped forest corridors protected within the Pinelands National Reserve. Below Penny Pot, the river widens on its approach to Mays Landing, still maintaining Class I character and optimal flows between 100–600 CFS according to gauge 01411000. From Mays Landing downstream, the Great Egg Harbor transitions to tidal estuary as it approaches Ocean City and the Atlantic. Palace Restaurant & Kayak Rentals provides outfitting services along the route. The cedar-stained water and undeveloped banks make this one of the more remote paddling experiences in the heavily populated Mid-Atlantic corridor.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
