Genesee River
About
From the Seneca Nation's historic Genesee Country, the Genesee River cuts 157 miles north through Wyoming, Livingston, and Monroe counties at an average 1300 CFS. The upper 50 miles from Wellsville to Letchworth flow Class I through rural valley farmland, while the famous Letchworth Gorge section remains closed to paddling above Mount Morris Dam — those waterfalls are for viewing only. Below the dam, 60 miles of Class I-III water run through increasingly suburban and urban terrain toward Rochester. The river responds well to seasonal flows between 400-2500 CFS optimal range, tracked on USGS gauge 04231600. Adventure Calls Outfitters runs guided trips on the navigable sections. New York designated portions as a State Scenic River, with Letchworth State Park protecting the gorge corridor that gives the Genesee its reputation as the "Grand Canyon of the East" — though paddlers experience that beauty from the rim trails, not the water.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
