About

The Erie Canal's completion in 1825 transformed the Mohawk River into America's highway to the west, and today's 149-mile river still follows that commercial corridor through Herkimer, Oneida, and Schenectady counties. At 2,400 CFS average flow (workable from 500–4,000), the Mohawk runs mostly flat water through three distinct sections. The upper 30 miles from Rome to Utica squeeze through a narrow valley with occasional Class I features. The middle 70 miles from Utica to Schenectady parallel the original Erie Canal route—now part of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. The final 50 miles from Schenectady drop toward Cohoes Falls before joining the Hudson River. Adirondack Lakes & Trails Outfitters services the watershed, which draws paddlers more for its historical significance than technical challenges. USGS gauge 01355475 tracks conditions for those planning multi-day expeditions down what remains one of New York's most navigable rivers.
