Green River Narrows
About
Class IV-V+ drops through six miles of North Carolina granite make the Green River Narrows one of the Southeast's most demanding runs. From Fishtop Access to Highway 176, the river cuts a technical gorge through Polk County at an average 320 CFS, with optimal flows between 200-600 CFS on gauge 02150000. Above 400 CFS, the big drops turn pushy and consequence rises sharply. The Narrows section requires unmaintained road access and runs through Green River Preserve corridor. Upstream sections offer progression opportunities — Class III-IV water above Fishtop provides warm-up for the main event, while the upper river from Green River Lake runs Class II for less experienced paddlers. Headwaters Outfitters serves the area for those seeking local knowledge or gear. This is creek boating at its most technical, with undercuts, sieves, and mandatory lines that demand precise execution.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
