Hazel Creek
About
Wild rainbows hold through twenty miles of backcountry wilderness in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with brook trout in the headwaters near Welch Bald and larger rainbows toward the Fontana Lake confluence. Hazel Creek flows through Swain County at 110 CFS average, optimal between 40–250 CFS on gauge 03514000. The upper reaches require hiking access for brook trout fishing, while the middle section runs through Proctor and the old logging corridor where wild rainbows dominate the pools and riffles. Below that, the lower creek holds larger rainbows before joining Fontana Lake. Fontana Marina provides boat access to the lower stretches, since road access was cut off when the lake was impounded. This is hike-in or boat-in fishing through protected watershed — no development, no stocking, just wild trout in mountain water.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
