Linville River
About
First Eastern Wilderness designation in 1964, the Linville Gorge splits this 40-mile river into distinct personalities across Burke and Avery counties. Above Linville Falls, Class I-II water follows the Blue Ridge Parkway approach through relatively open terrain. The Gorge itself drops through Class IV-V wilderness canyon — expert-only water that requires backcountry permits and serious whitewater skills. Below the Gorge, the river moderates to Class I-III as it transitions toward Lake James. At 320 CFS average with an optimal range of 200-1000 CFS, the Linville runs best in spring and after heavy rains. USGS gauge 02138500 tracks flows, though Gorge conditions depend heavily on recent precipitation in the Blue Ridge headwaters. Linville Gorge Adventures operates guided trips on appropriate sections. The river holds National Wild & Scenic River Study status, though not full designation.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
