Little Tennessee River
About
From the pastoral valleys around Otto through Franklin and down to Fontana Lake, the Little Tennessee flows 135 miles through Macon and Swain counties at an average 1,420 CFS. The upper reach from Otto to Franklin runs Class I through farm country, while the middle section to Fontana Lake picks up riffles and smallmouth bass water. Below Fontana Dam, cold tailwater releases support wild trout populations in a completely different fishery. The river flows through the Qualla Boundary and runs adjacent to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with sections managed under the 2017 Cherokee Cultural Landscape Initiative. Optimal flows range from 500 to 2,500 CFS on USGS gauge 03503000. Smoky Mountain River Experience operates guided trips on the system.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
