Neuse River
About
From Falls Lake through Raleigh and 275 miles east to Pamlico Sound, the Neuse cuts across North Carolina's Coastal Plain on a gradient that shifts from piedmont riffles to tidal blackwater. The Neuse River Trail Greenway, completed in 2013, follows the upper corridor through Wake County with Class I paddling and urban access points. Below Raleigh to Smithfield, Class I riffles hold smallmouth and largemouth bass populations over a more natural bottom. The lower Neuse from Kinston downstream enters tidal influence, widening into brackish marshes before reaching the sound. At 2450 CFS average flow (optimal range 800–3000 CFS), the river maintains year-round navigability even through the upper riffles. The Tuscarora and Neusiok peoples inhabited these watersheds before European contact, with the Neusiok giving the river its name. Frog Hollow Outdoors provides outfitting services along the corridor.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
