South Toe River
About
From Mount Mitchell's headwaters through Yancey County, the South Toe River runs 24 miles of riffle water at an average 170 CFS. The upper reaches flow as Class I water through hatchery-supported trout zones, while the lower South Toe below Newdale holds wild trout designation. Black Mountain Campground marks the most heavily fished section, where anglers work the pools and runs within Pisgah National Forest boundaries. Curtis Wright Outfitters provides guided trips on water that fishes well between 60 and 350 CFS according to USGS gauge 03463300. Mount Mitchell State Park was established in 1915, protecting the high-elevation watershed that feeds these mountain streams.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
