Tuckasegee River
About
Dam-release whitewater below Dillsboro creates the Tuckasegee's signature run — Class II–III drops that fire at controlled flows when Duke Energy opens the gates. The river runs 40 miles through Jackson County, averaging 1,100 CFS with an optimal range from 300 to 2,000 CFS depending on the section. Above the dam, the Sylva to Dillsboro stretch offers Class I–II town floating through downtown corridors. Below Dillsboro, the river mellows to Class I–II as it continues toward Fontana Lake. Headwaters rise in the Nantahala National Forest, and in 2024 the entire system gained designation as the Tuckasegee River Blueway, part of Western North Carolina's expanding paddle trail network. Tuckasegee Outfitters operates on the system, and paddlers track releases and flows on USGS gauge 03513000 to time their runs.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
