About

Below Nantahala Lake in Macon County, the Upper Nantahala delivers five miles of Class III-IV whitewater that runs only when recent rains push flows above 400 CFS. At 520 CFS average, this section through the Nantahala National Forest demands technical boat handling and reliable roll — the gradient is steep, the drops are consequence, and there's no commercial traffic to follow. White Oak Creek feeds in as a technical tributary run for expert paddlers. The 1942 construction of Nantahala Dam created the lake that now controls upstream flows, making this an episodic run dependent on spill events and storm water. Nantahala Outdoor Center operates from the area, though their main focus stays downstream in the Gorge section. The Upper connects to that famous commercial stretch through a short transition reach, but the character changes completely — this 18-mile system rewards boaters who can read water fast and handle exposure in remote National Forest terrain.
