About

Wild & Scenic since 2000, Wilson Creek cuts 23 miles through Caldwell County's Pisgah National Forest with runs that shift from catch-and-release fly water to Class II-IV whitewater. The upper section holds NC Heritage Trout Water status with wild populations under fly-fishing-only regulations. Below that, Wilson Creek Gorge delivers the technical drops — Class II-IV depending on the 180 CFS average flow, with optimal conditions between 100-500 CFS on gauge 02140510. The lower section mellows to Class II family water below the gorge. USFS manages the gorge section, and the Wilson Creek Visitor Center coordinates with local outfitters. At higher flows the gorge pushes the upper end of its classification, making gauge reading essential for anything beyond intermediate paddling skills.
