Missouri River — Lake Sakakawea to Bismarck
About
Garrison Dam releases create 80 miles of cold tailwater flowing at 18,000 CFS average through McLean and Burleigh counties in North Dakota. The upper 30 miles from Garrison Dam to Stanton hold the coldest water where the Knife River enters, while the lower 50 miles to Bismarck widen into a prairie river bordered by cottonwood galleries. Lewis and Clark wintered at Fort Mandan along these banks in 1804–1805, and the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site preserves the Hidatsa and Mandan settlements that hosted the expedition. Optimal flows run 10,000–30,000 CFS on gauge 06340500, with Class I water throughout. Missouri River Adventures and Cross Ranch State Park provide outfitting services for this section of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. The Knife River Indian Villages received Living Heritage designation in 2019, recognizing ongoing tribal connections to these ancestral lands.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
