Mad River
About
Spring-fed headwaters through Champaign and Clark counties support Ohio's Mad River as both a Blue-Ribbon Trout Stream and State Scenic River across 70 miles to its Great Miami confluence. At 480 CFS average with optimal flows from 200–1200, the river offers Class I–II paddling that shifts character through three distinct sections. The upper 20 miles from Urbana to West Liberty hold the coldest water and the trout fishing, while the middle 25 miles from West Liberty to Springfield provide the best paddling through pastoral valley farmland. Below Springfield, the final 25 miles widen toward Dayton and the confluence. Mad River Outfitters services the corridor, and USGS gauge 03267000 tracks conditions. The spring influence keeps water temperatures favorable for trout in the headwater sections, though the fishery transitions to warmwater species as the river gains size downstream.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
