Olentangy River
About
Through Delaware and Franklin counties, the Olentangy runs 97 miles of riffles and pools before joining the Scioto at Columbus. Designated an Ohio State Scenic River, it averages 340 CFS with optimal paddling between 150–600 CFS on gauge 03226800. The upper 20 miles from Delaware to Powell pass through rural farmland with the cleanest water and most consistent riffle structure. Below Powell, 15 miles of suburban corridor show the effects of recent dam removals, creating new riffle-pool sequences where old impoundments once backed up flow. The final 12 miles through urban Columbus follow the Olentangy River Greenway, a municipal trail system that provides continuous river access through the city center. Most paddlers focus on the Delaware-to-Powell section for its sustained riffle runs and higher water quality, though the greenway section offers convenient urban paddling when flows cooperate.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
