Vermilion River
About
From Fitchville through a sandstone gorge to Lake Erie, the Vermilion River cuts 40 miles through Ashland and Huron counties as Ohio's State Scenic River. The middle section from Wakeman to Mill Hollow drops through the deepest gorge cut, with sandstone walls rising above Class I-II water. Above Wakeman, 15 miles of wooded corridor provide quieter paddling through farmland and forest. Below Mill Hollow, the final 13 miles flatten toward the lake through more developed terrain. At 320 CFS average, the Vermilion runs best between 200-1000 CFS on gauge 04199500. The Vermilion River Reservation maintains access and outfitting services along the corridor. Spring snowmelt and storm runoff drive most of the flow variability in this Lake Erie tributary.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
