Caney River
About
Through Washington County's Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, the Caney River winds 30 miles past 2,500 bison that have grazed these grasslands since the preserve's 1989 establishment. This section offers views across the Osage Nation's ancestral tallgrass prairie homeland — one of the few remaining intact prairie ecosystems in North America. The river runs 150 miles total at an average 580 CFS, with optimal flows between 200-1500 CFS on gauge 07174500. Below the preserve, the Bartlesville to Ramona stretch covers 40 miles through prairie transition zones where the channel widens considerably. All sections run Class I water suitable for beginning paddlers. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve Visitor Center coordinates access through bison country, where American bison roam freely across 39,000 acres of restored prairie. Spring through fall offers the best paddling conditions, when prairie grasses reach full height and wildflower blooms peak across the watershed.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
