Lower Mountain Fork
About
Below Broken Bow Dam, the Lower Mountain Fork cuts 12 miles of Oklahoma's only reliable trout water through McCurtain County in the Ouachita Mountains. Dam releases keep flows steady at 480 CFS average, with optimal paddling from 200 to 1,500 CFS. The upper four miles from the spillway to Presbyterian Falls offer the best whitewater — Class II-III drops that make this the state's premier technical run. Below Presbyterian Falls, the remaining eight miles to Beavers Bend settle into Class I-II water managed as Oklahoma's Blue Ribbon Trout Stream. Cold tailwater releases from Broken Bow Dam, completed in 1968, transformed what had been warm Choctaw Nation homeland into trout habitat. Beavers Bend State Park protects the corridor, and outfitters including Beavers Bend Fly Shop and Mountain Fork Outfitters serve the steady traffic of anglers and paddlers who come for reliable flows year-round. USGS gauge 07339000 tracks the releases that keep this system fishable when other Oklahoma rivers run warm or dry.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
