Washita River
About
The Washita runs 575 miles through Custer and Caddo counties in Oklahoma, averaging 900 CFS with an optimal range of 200–2000 CFS on USGS gauge 07325000. From Foss Reservoir to Clinton, 40 miles of Class I water cuts through western Oklahoma prairie. Below Chickasha, the river widens for 60 miles to Pauls Valley, carving red earth banks characteristic of the region. The lower 80 miles carry bigger water toward the Red River confluence. The Cheyenne and Arapaho held the Washita Valley as traditional territory before European contact. Washita Battlefield National Historic Park preserves part of the corridor, while Washita National Wildlife Refuge provides habitat along the lower reaches. The refuge visitor center offers information for paddlers planning trips on this prairie river system.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
