McKenzie River
About
Crystal spring waters emerge from Clear Lake and build through 90 miles of the Cascade Range, creating the McKenzie River's legendary drift boat fishery through Lane County. Averaging 1,800 CFS with an optimal range of 600–3,500, the McKenzie offers everything from Class I spring-fed headwaters to Class II-III whitewater through old-growth Douglas fir corridors. The upper reach earned Wild & Scenic designation in 1988, protecting the clearest water in Oregon's Willamette National Forest. Paradise to Finn Rock covers the most popular float — Class II-III water that built the McKenzie's reputation among drift boat guides. Below Finn Rock to Walterville, the gradient mellows to Class I-II through broader valleys. The Kalapuya people called this drainage home for millennia before Euro-American settlement. The 2020 Holiday Farm Fire devastated much of the upper watershed, though recovery is underway. Oregon Drift Boat Guide Service and Lane County River Adventures run commercial trips on sections where the forest is healing.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
