Kiskiminetas River
About
From Saltsburg to its confluence with the Allegheny, the Kiskiminetas carries substantial flows through 27 miles of Westmoreland and Armstrong counties. At 1,850 CFS average (optimal 800–3,500), the Kiski offers reliable volume across three distinct sections. The upper reach from Saltsburg to Avonmore runs Class I–II through forested corridors, while the middle stretch to Apollo drops to Class I and holds good smallmouth bass water. The final 10 miles from Apollo to the Allegheny confluence remain Class I with steady current. Pennsylvania named the Kiskiminetas its River of the Year in 2018, and the Kiski-Conemaugh River Trail now links multiple access points along the corridor. The Kiski-Conemaugh Riverkeeper maintains active stewardship of the watershed. USGS gauge 03048500 tracks flows that can swing wide — the river handles high water well but gets bony below 800 CFS.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
