Pine Creek
About
Through Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon, Pine Creek cuts 73 miles of Class I-II water averaging 780 CFS between limestone walls that rise 1,000 feet above the streambed. The upper gorge from Ansonia to Tiadaghton covers 28 miles through the deepest canyon sections, while the mid-gorge classic from Tiadaghton to Blackwell runs 25 miles of consistent paddling. The lower 18 miles from Blackwell to Waterville parallel the Pine Creek Rail-Trail, which provides 62 miles of gorge access since its completion in 2012. Optimal flows run 300–1,500 CFS on gauge 01549700, with spring runoff and storm events pushing the creek well above that range. From the 1850s through 1920, the Great Pine Harvest sent massive log drives down Pine Creek to the Williamsport mills, and the hemlock-darkened gorge walls still show the scars. Pine Creek Outfitters serves the corridor through Tioga State Forest. The canyon earned its "Grand" designation honestly — few eastern rivers offer this combination of sustained whitewater and vertical relief.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
