About

From the Class IV-V technical drops of the Upper Yough through Maryland to the beginner-friendly Middle Yough, this 132-mile river cuts through Fayette and Somerset counties with some of the East's most varied whitewater. The Lower Yough from Ohiopyle to Bruner Run draws over 250,000 paddlers annually to its 7.5 miles of Class III-IV rapids — making it the most commercially run section in the eastern United States. At 2,100 CFS average flow, the Youghiogheny runs best between 1,500-4,000 CFS on gauge 03076500.

The Upper Yough from Sang Run to Friendsville, Maryland demands technical boat handling through Class IV-V continuous drops, while the Middle Yough between Confluence and Ohiopyle offers mellow Class I-II water suitable for learning. Fort Necessity marked early European conflict here in 1754 during the French and Indian War, and the Connellsville Coke region powered industrial development through the early 1900s. Ohiopyle State Park established formal whitewater management in 1978, and outfitters including Wilderness Voyageurs and White Water Adventurers now coordinate the heavy commercial traffic through the Lower Yough's premier rapids.
