Pawtuxet River
About
From West Warwick downstream through the mill corridor, the Pawtuxet River runs Class I-II water at 340 CFS average through Kent and Providence counties. The upper section to Cranston holds the gradient and occasional rapids; below Cranston to Pawtuxet Village, the current flattens to Class I as tidal influence begins. At 26 miles total length, the Pawtuxet operates under the oversight of the Pawtuxet River Authority and draws paddlers checking USGS gauge 01116500 for optimal flows between 100-600 CFS. The Rhode Island Canoe & Kayak Association coordinates group trips and maintains access information. The lower reach passes through the Gaspee Point Historic District before meeting Narragansett Bay.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
