Black River
About
Wild & Scenic designation came to the Black River in 2023, protecting 150 miles of South Carolina blackwater that flows through Williamsburg County to Winyah Bay. The Winyah and Waccamaw peoples knew these dark, tannin-stained waters long before European contact. At 480 CFS average flow (optimal range 200–1000), the Black moves through three distinct sections: the upper reach near Kingstree runs Class I through blackwater cypress swamps, the middle section from Andrews to Rhems forms the core Wild & Scenic corridor, and the lower stretch from Rhems to Winyah Bay enters tidal blackwater influenced by Atlantic surge. The river earned both state Scenic River status and designation as the Black River Water Trail before federal recognition arrived. Black River Outdoors Center provides gear and guidance for paddlers working the corridor. USGS gauge 02136000 tracks conditions, though the Black's gentle gradient and consistent tannic flow make it more forgiving than the typical Coastal Plain blackwater system.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
