About

Cherokee and Catawba territory for millennia, the Broad River cuts 150 miles of Piedmont shoals and island complexes through Cherokee and Union counties before reaching Columbia. At 4,200 CFS average, this is substantial water — optimal range 500–5,000 CFS tracked on USGS gauge 02156500. The upper 50 miles from Cherokee County to Lockhart run through classic Piedmont shoals, while the middle section from Lockhart to Parr Shoals offers 50 miles of islands and Class I-II rapids. The lower 50 miles from Parr Shoals to the capital flatten as the river approaches the fall line. South Carolina designated it a Scenic River in 2008, and the Broad River Waterfowl Area protects key bottomland habitat. Broad River Outfitters serves paddlers looking to tackle the middle sections, where the combination of flow volume and granite ledges creates the most dynamic water on the system.
