Vermillion River
About
Rolling prairie defines 120 miles of the Vermillion River through Turner and Clay counties, averaging 320 CFS with workable flows from 100–800 CFS on USGS gauge 06478690. The Yankton Sioux held Spirit Mound as sacred ground before Lewis and Clark reached the area in 1804, drawn by the same prominent rise that marks the lower river corridor today. From Parker to Centerville covers 40 miles of upper Vermillion through open farmland, while the lower 40 miles from Centerville to Vermillion pass the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie designation. Class I water throughout makes this a mild float suited to canoes and beginning kayakers. Vermillion River Outfitters provides services along the corridor for paddlers who prefer not to shuttle their own gear.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
