From Apalachia Dam through Polk and Bradley counties, the Hiwassee runs 72 miles of controlled releases that create some of the Southeast's most reliable paddling. TVA dam releases maintain flows averaging 1,700 CFS with an optimal range of 900–3,500 CFS, monitored at USGS gauge 03566000. The five-mile Apalachia Dam release section draws the heaviest traffic with Class II–III drops immediately below the powerhouse. Downstream, the Reliance to Towee Creek stretch offers Class I–II family water, while the lower Hiwassee widens into calm Class I floats through Cherokee National Forest corridor.
Wild and stocked trout populations earned the river Blue-Ribbon Trout Stream status, with cooler dam releases supporting holdover rainbows and browns well into summer. The John Muir Scenic Trail, established in 1968, parallels much of the upper river. Commercial outfitters including Hiwassee Outfitters and Nantahala Outdoor Center run daily trips during release periods. The Copper Basin mining disaster of the 1890s–1930s stripped surrounding mountains bare, but natural recovery and replanting efforts have restored much of the watershed's forest cover.
