Devils River
About
Spring-fed flows average 240 CFS through 45 miles of limestone canyon in Val Verde County, with optimal paddling between 100–800 CFS on gauge 08449100. The Devils River cuts two distinct sections: Baker Crossing to Dolan Falls covers 22 miles of remote upper canyon, while Dolan Falls to Lake Amistad runs 23 miles through the lower canyon with Class I–II water. Class I–III ratings reflect the variable nature of limestone drops and ledges that shift character with water levels. The Lower Pecos Rock Art sites along the corridor represent 4,000 years of ceremonial use by indigenous peoples. Devils River State Natural Area manages access and conservation for this Texas priority watershed, with the spring-fed nature maintaining consistent flows even during regional drought periods.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
