West River
About
Ball Mountain Dam releases create Vermont's most reliable whitewater run, pushing the West River from its typical Class II character into sustained Class III-IV rapids below the dam. The 680 CFS average jumps to 1,500+ during scheduled releases, transforming the Jamaica section into technical boulder gardens and ledge drops that draw kayakers from across New England. Above the dam, 36 miles of river drain Windham County's steep watersheds, but the real action concentrates in the miles immediately below Ball Mountain Dam to Jamaica. Vermont Canoe & Kayak operates on this stretch, timing trips to the Army Corps release schedule. Below Jamaica, the West River settles back to Class I-II character for its run toward Brattleboro. USGS gauge 01155500 tracks the flows — optimal range runs 400-1,500 CFS, with the higher numbers coming during dam releases rather than natural spates. The state has proposed Wild & Scenic designation for portions of the corridor.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
