Potomac River — South Branch
About
Smoke Hole Canyon cuts the deepest gorge on the South Branch Potomac, dropping 25 miles of Class I-III water through Pendleton and Grant counties in West Virginia's eastern panhandle. At 1,200 CFS average, the South Branch runs bigger than most Appalachian rivers — optimal range stretches from 300 to 2,000 CFS, giving paddlers a wide window through spring and early summer. The upper reaches in Pendleton County offer Class I-II mountain headwaters, while the canyon section provides the technical water before the river mellows to Class I-II valley runs below Smoke Hole toward Petersburg. Smoke Hole Outfitters provides commercial trips through the gorge, which lies within the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. The 130-mile South Branch was recognized in 2023 as East Coast Wilderness Paddling for the Smoke Hole Canyon section, reflecting the remote character of this Monongahela National Forest corridor.
