Rapidan River
About
From Shenandoah National Park headwaters to the Rappahannock confluence, the Rapidan cuts 88 miles through Madison and Orange counties at an average 480 CFS. The upper 30 miles from the park boundary to Madison run Class I-II through mountain terrain, while the middle and lower sections flatten to Class I as the river enters piedmont country. Optimal flows range from 200 to 1,200 CFS on USGS gauge 01667500. The headwaters flow through Shenandoah National Park, where Camp Hoover — Herbert Hoover's presidential retreat — holds National Historic Landmark status. Downstream sections pass through the Rapidan Wildlife Management Area and traverse Civil War battlefield corridors between Madison and Orange. Clore Bros. Outfitters provides commercial trips on selected stretches. The Manahoac and Monacan peoples held this eastern piedmont territory before European contact.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
