South River — Waynesboro
About
Virginia Heritage Trout Water designation marks the South River's 2.5-mile catch-and-release section through Waynesboro as the trophy reach of this 14-mile Augusta County stream. Averaging 130 CFS with optimal conditions between 50–300 CFS, the South River runs mostly riffles and pools suitable for wading anglers. Above Waynesboro, the state stocks trout in faster water; below the city, the river widens into mixed warm and cool water species habitat. The South River Restoration Project launched in the 2010s to address water quality issues in the watershed. South River Fly Shop provides local guiding and tackle for the urban trout fishery. USGS gauge 01626000 tracks flows for timing visits to the catch-and-release water, where wild and holdover trout concentrate in the deeper runs below town.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
